Filmmaking is an art. But if you want to make a living with your art, it pays to learn the business side of the industry. In this seminar of the Heartland Film Institute, documentary producer Johan Bos will reveal the secrets of earning a living at your craft. Bos will discuss the necessary steps in producing a film for its message and instruct you how to research and include the elements that are important to program directors. Although the seminar will focus on making documentaries, Bos’ insights on financing, budgeting, distribution and other practical considerations are applicable to any genre of filmmaking.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Johan Bos’ career as a producer/director/writer ranges from television ads to numerous PBS documentaries. Filmmaking opened travel opportunities all over the world to explore topics from Egyptian art to motorcycling along the Oregon coast to life in Mexico. Bos has gained decades of experience with all aspects of the filmmaking process, from producing and directing to post-production and distribution.
His documentaries are frequently broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. During this seminar, he will show clips of his currently airing film, As Close As You Dare. In between film projects, Johan shares his experience with film students at various colleges across the country as a guest faculty member. With his variety of practical film experiences, Johan Bos has the insight and knowledge to increase your odds of success in The Business of Filmmaking.

This seminar is free, but does require advance registration. A $10 Networking Lunch will follow the seminar to allow participants time for additional Q&A and informal conversation with the presenter and each other.

LOCATION
The Heartland Film Institute will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center, located on University Boulevard between Vermont Street & Michigan Street. Click on the map to the right to get directions from your location.
Cars/Vans: Parking is available for $5 in the Vermont Street parking garage (1004 W. Vermont St.), which is attached to the Campus Center. Park on the third floor of the garage to access the walkway into the Campus Center. From the third floor of the Vermont Street parking garage, you will enter the Campus Center on the second floor. Take the escalator or elevator to the fourth floor. Vans over 6'10" should reserve bus parking.
Buses: Bus parking is available for $7.50 and must be reserved in advance by adding this option to your registration order. Further parking instructions will be sent to the group contact.
